Death County: Hutchinson
Certificate: 34435

Stanley Mitchell, 20, a truck driver for the Apache Refinery at Sunray, was fatally injured shortly before last midnight when his light truck overturned on a curve 45 miles north of Borger. He never regained consciousness. Delmer Quimby also from the Apache camp, was injured but returned to Sunray. The two were en route to Borger and Mitchell either did not see the turn in the road or was driving too fast reported a farmer in the vicinity who saw the lights of the car as it was wrecked and who summoned aid. The accident occurred about four miles north of the Dumas highway.

Mitchell suffered a crushed chest and a gaping hole in his head and died en route to Borger. The truck was demolished. Quimby was thrown clear of the wreck. The accident happened about 11:30 p.m. A mother and a brother of the deceased were reported en route here today from their home at Wheeler. Mitchell is reported to have been married.

A Wilson-Buntin ambulance driven by Perry Powell and manned by Bob Sorrells, made the 45 miles in 52 minutes, despite the fact that the lights failed at Belle Plains when the car hit a bump in the road. With siren on to clear the road of stray cattle, the ambulance sped on with only starlight to guide the driver. The lights were repaired while the ambulance attendants picked up the injured youth.

Survivors of the dead youth are the parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.C. Mitchell, Wheeler, five sisters, Mrs. Charles Carter, Mrs. Percy Rowe, Mrs. Joe Bradford, Miss Marry Sue and Miss Viola Mitchell, all of Wheeler, E.E. Mitchell, Wheeler, and Harold Mitchell, Shamrock, brothers. Funeral services will be from Wheeler at 10 a.m. Thursday.
