Richard E. "Cotton" Friemel, 86, of Canyon died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012, in Amarillo.
Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Monday in Brooks Chapel with Bill Doresy and Raymond Artho officiating. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Umbarger with the Rev. Daniel Dreher as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Arrangements are by Brooks Funeral Directors of Canyon.
Richard was born Oct. 29, 1925, in Randall County to E.J. and Emilie Kriscke Friemel. He attended Umbarger public schools. He married Lillian Monica Grabber on Aug. 24, 1949, in Umbarger and celebrated 60 years of marriage.
Richard was a lifelong farmer in the Umbarger area, and his love of gardening was evident as you passed by his place. His greatest joy was his 25 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. Richard was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus, and formerly served on many boards including Umbarger school board, St. Mary's Parish Council, High Plains Underground Water Conservation and the Umbarger Co-op. He served as a rifleman in the Army during World War II and was stationed in Europe.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian, in 2010; two sons, Kevin and Gerard; a daughter, Rene; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Survivors include a son, Robert Friemel and wife Karen of Umbarger; three daughters, Jeanette Bezner and husband Frank of Bushland, Evelyn Detten and husband Paul of Panhandle and Valerie Kuhnert and husband Charles of Umbarger; 25 grandchidlren and 29 great-grandchildren.

UMBARGER - Lillian Monica Friemel, 81, died Tuesday, July 6, 2010.
Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Friday in Brooks Funeral Directors Chapel in Canyon with Bill Dorsey and Raymond Artho officiating. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Umbarger with the Rev. George Kalampatt, pastor, as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.
Lillian was born Dec. 16, 1928, in Carson County to Frank and Clara Detten Grabber. She graduated from Umbarger High School in 1947. She married Richard E. Friemel on Aug. 24, 1949, in Umbarger.
Lillian was a homemaker, and she loved to cook, sew and quilt.
Lillian was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, St. Mary's Altar Society and Christian Mothers. She loved her church and was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and mother-in-law.
Her greatest joy was her family and her music. She played the piano and the accordion.
The family wants to give a special thank you to all of Lillian's wonderful caregivers, Sam Luedke, Dee Ann Lewis, BJ Elrod and Peter Willis, for taking such good care of her.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Kevin and Gerard; a daughter, Rene; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband, Richard E. Friemel; three daughters, Jeanette Bezner and husband Frank of Bushland, Evelyn Detten and husband Paul of Panhandle, and Valerie Kuhnert and husband Charles of Umbarger; a son, Robert Friemel and wife Karen of Umbarger; 24 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; three brothers, John Grabber, Bernard Grabber and Ed Grabber, all of Umbarger; and two sisters, Sister Theresa Grabber of San Antonio and Bernice Grabber Tintes of Belgrade, Minn.
