STINNETT- Paul "Tige" Groves, 99, died Friday, June 2, 2006. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. today in Stinnett Cemetery with Zeb Sailor, pastor of Stinnett Church of Christ, officiating. Arrangements are by Brown Funeral Directors of Stinnett.

Mr. Groves was born July 7, 1906, in Wheeler County and moved to Hutchinson County when he was 2 years old. He was raised north of Stinnett on the Old Groves Home Place and attended the Groves school. His parents were Frank and Maggie Groves. Tige was the 10th of 11 kids. As a young man, Tige rode on many cattle drives and worked for some of the old ranchers. Later in life, he worked many years for Nabob Oil Co. He always was a handyman and could fix or build anything. One thing Tige loved to do was build fence. He loved the outdoors and building fence was right down his alley. Tige built a lot of the fences from Stinnett to Lake Meredith and many ranchers in the local area always called on him to build or repair their fences. Tige loved to garden and used to have some of the most beautiful gardens in town. The one thing that his grandchildren will remember are all the stories, jokes and sayings that he could tell. Many stories were told over and over with a lot of history of the Texas Panhandle. Tige knew the history of Hutchinson County very well. He supplied much history of Hutchinson County to locals, newspapers and anyone who would listen. Tige loved a good joke and loved to laugh. He could fill the room with his laughter. In Tige”s later years, he enjoyed reading the Bible and became very knowledgeable of the Scriptures. This was one thing he missed after his eyesight went bad.

Tige married Pauline "Polly" Wilson on Aug. 25, 1934. She preceded him in death in 1990. Together, they had three children. The family would like to thank all of Tige s nieces, nephews and longtime friends for stopping by and visiting with him when they could. He always loved their company. Special "thanks" to his caregivers, Vicky Cordova and Harlene Judkins. As Granddaddy Tige always said, "Shut the door, Richard."

He was also preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Amos, Richard, Gus, Tom, Fred and Ernest Groves; and three sisters, Faye Morton, Margurite Groves and Blanche Britain. Survivors include a son, Rob Groves and wife Jorita of Bushland; two daughters, Rue Paula Duncan and husband VJ of Canyon and Susie Butler and husband Russ of Boise, Idaho; a sister, Hazel Thompson of Stinnett, who is 105 years old; two sisters-in-law, Maple Wilson of Amarillo and Allie May Clark of Canyon; nine grandchildren, Jo Angela Lamb, Rob E. Groves, Kelly Mitchell, Cody Duncan, Jay Duncan, Douglas McGee, Justin McGee, Mendi McGee and Phil Butler; 15 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild on the way. Pallbearers will be Fred Thompson, Marshall Thompson, Buzz Britain, Rooster Dawson, John Henry Felkner, Butch Laster and Mac Conaway. The body will be available for viewing until service time today in Brown Funeral Directors Memorial Chapel in Stinnett.
