SPEARMAN - Verna Lawrence Jarvis, 91, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Rick Patrick and the Rev. Russ Gibbs, former pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Lieb Cemetery in rural Hutchinson County. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.

Mrs. Jarvis was born in Armstrong, Mo., and moved to the area 89 years ago. She lived in Ochiltree County from 1910 until moving to Hansford County in 1928. A member of the first class to attend all four years at the new school, she graduated from Perryton High School in 1924.

In 1926, Mrs. Jarvis graduated from Wayland College and then graduated from Simmons University in 1928. She did postgraduate work at University of Colorado. From 1928 until 1936, she taught English and Spanish at Spearman High School.

With her husband, Mrs. Jarvis farmed in Hutchinson County until the mid1980s. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Spearman where she was a member of Tel Sunday School Class, Women's Missionary Union and taught fourth- and fifth-grade Sunday School for 30 years. She was a former Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader, member of Daughters of the Nile, life member of the Texas Parents-Teachers Association, member of the Gladiola Flower Club, 20th Century Club and Spearman Music Club.

She married Woodville Jarvis in 1936 at Borger. He died in 1996.

Survivors include a daughter, Carol Anne Pack of Stinnett; a son, Wesley W. Jarvis of Stinnett; a sister, Ruth Holt of Lubbock; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be to First Baptist Church of Spearman or Hansford Hospice.
