*Obituary for Vernon
Funeral services for Vernon Payton, 79, who resided three miles east of Borger, were at 11 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Jones, pastor, officiating.

Burial was in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery by Minton-Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger.

Mr. Payton died Friday, April 12, 1996 in High Plains Baptist Hospital in Amarillo.

A native of Mills, N.M., he had been a Borger resident since 1945. He was a rancher and a member of the National Cutting Horse Association, Quarter Horse Association, and past member of the Hutchinson County Sheriff's Posse.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Essie Lavon Payton in 1986.

Survivors include three adopted grandchildren, Mark and LeAnn Mitchell of Borger; Mike and Lynn Robertson of Buffalo, Okla.; Jim and Cathy Daugherty of Elida, N.M.; five adopted great-grandchildren; a brother, Bruce Payton of Harrah, Okla.; two sisters, Lucille Taylor of Oklahoma City, Okla.; and Margie Snodgrass of Pryor, Okla.

Lavon Payton, 64, who resided east of Borger, died Monday in High Plains Baptist Hospital in Amarillo.

A housewife, she was a native of Kenna, N.M. and a county resident since 1945.

She was a member of the Baptist Church and she held local and state offices. She helped organize the Alhambra Home Demonstration Club, was a leader of the Spring Creek 4H Club and a volunteer at Girlstown.

She is survived by her husband, Vernon, of the home, five sisters, Loveta Vaughn of Borger, Freddie Berryhill, Borger, Peggy Anthony of Amarillo, Billie Jean Jones, Albuquerque, N.M., Jo Coleman, Torrance, Calif., and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Glenneth Harrington officiating.

Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park under the direction of Minton/Chatwell Funeral Directors.

Memorials mayu [sic] be made to the Don and Sybil Harrington Cancer Center in Amarillo.
