*Obituary
Funeral services for Joe L. Briggs, 48, were held at 4 p.m. Monday in the First Methodist church of Borger with the Reverend R.N. Huckabee officiating.
Briggs died at his home, 1108 Lindsey street, at 9 p.m. Friday following a lengthy illness.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Thalia Briggs; one son, Jack L. Briggs; two daughters, Mrs. A.M. Tillman, jr. and Mrs. H.E. Allen, both of Norman, Okla.; three sisters, Mrs. Nell Gordon of Danville, Ky., Mrs. Emmett McClelland of Troy, Kans., and Miss Alene Briggs of Washington, D.C.; and one brother, H.J. Briggs of St. Joseph, Mo.
Briggs was born Nov. 1, 1899, in Troy, Kans. He came to Borger from Slick, Okla., and opened a drug store in Phillips in 1926.
Known widely as an active sports fan, Briggs was a member of the Borger Masonic temple, the Khiva temple, The Phillips Lions club, and was a member of the board of trustees of the First Methodist church of Borger. He was a former Democratic party chairman for Hutchinson county.
Active pall bearers were Glen Cox, Claude Ruby, Elmer Fite, Elmo Hord, Gordon Burch and Henderson O'Neal.
Honorary pall bearers were Dr. H.M. Hamra, Dr. W.W. Brooks, E.F. Copeland, A.O. Pickens, Gordon Parrish, Charles Riley, Fritz Ostrom, Earl Estep, Frank Blair, H.C. Walker, Norman Perkins, H.C. Barnes, Eris Stewart, Lee Johnson, Earl Anderson. C.A. Sooter, Les Adair, Elsa Adams, Walt Delametter, Bill Niesler, F.D. Holder, Gordon Ham, Dr. Roy Webb, Bill Heskew, C.A. Cryer, Ester Hanna, Vern Farquhar, C.J. Jackson, L.D. Patton, Joe Blair, Leon Brock, Ambrose Caufield, W.A. Haren and H.A. Haren.
Graveside services were conducted by the Masonic lodge. Interment was in Highland Park cemetery under the direction of the Minton Funeral home.
