*Obituary
Son, brother, husband, father, reporter, mentor: just some of the many hats Daniel (Dan) Garcia wore throughout his life.
God decided to change Dan's address just after 12:30 a.m. on February 24, 2017. He was 66 years old.
A Memorial service will be Friday, March 3rd at 2 p.m. at the Church of the Good Shepherd, located at 1007 Burnett, Wichita Falls, Texas, 76301. Arrangements are under the direction of Lunn's Colonial Funeral Home.
Dan was born in Borger, Texas on December 22, 1950. At an early age, he fell in love with journalism.
His first job in the news business was in high school as a photographer for The Borger News-Herald. After graduating from West Texas A&M University, Dan worked for the Amarillo Globe News.
Dan soon moved into television, spending nine years at ABC affiliate KVII-TV, before moving to San Antonio, where he worked at the NBC affiliate- then known as KMOL, now as WOAI-TV, from 1983 to 1994 before heading to Houston for a consumer reporting job at KHOU-TV.
While in San Antonio, he created a consumer segment called "Call Four," and with the help of a phone bank manned by the Junior League of San Antonio, the San Antonio Junior Forum and the San Antonio Jewish Women's League, he helped many people get help they may otherwise not have gotten.
In 2000, he took the next step in his career and became a news director at the local NBC affiliate KFDX-TV in Wichita Falls.
For the next nine years he mentored countless reporters, anchors, photographers and more in Wichita Falls and San Antonio.
Dan moved back to San Antonio to work as a news director at the Telemundo station before it closed. He returned to Wichita Falls in 2007 as the news director for the CBS affiliate KAUZ-TV.
During that time, he served as President of the Downtown Rotary Club in Wichita Falls, as well as a flag captain, and helped with many other civic projects.
In 2009, at the age of 59, and after 35 years in the TV business, Dan decided to slow down and make Wichita Falls his permanent home. After some heavy soul searching, he made a huge career change by becoming a funeral director for Lunn's Colonial Funeral Home, where he worked until his death.
Dan died just how he wanted, at home, surrounded by family.
He is preceded by his parents, Octaviano P. Garcia Sr. and Concepcion Robles Garcia, and his sister, Sophia Garcia-Robles.
Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Kathy Busch Garcia, and his three children, Duncan W. Garcia and his wife AJ (San Antonio, TX), Danielle Garcia, and her boyfriend and his son Seth and Samuel Browne (Colorado Springs, CO), and Katy G. Garcia (Wichita Falls, TX). His mother in law Mildred Busch, two sisters; Olivia Martinez (Floresville, TX), Yvonne Payne and her husband, Ron (Borger, TX), one brother, Pete Garcia Jr. (Borger, TX) and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Integra Care, 4309 Old Jacksboro Hwy. Suite B. Wichita Falls, TX 76302.
