As a combat officer he received the Presidential Unit Citation for action on Old Baldy and famed Pork Chop Hill. He also received personal commendation from his batallion [sic] commander and later the Bronze Star Medal.

Bob Lindsey, 49, farmer, rancher, businessman dies

Robert Terry Lindsey, farmer, rancher, soldier, businessman and Canyon civic leader, died early Saturday morning iin St. Anthony's Hospital where he had undergone open heart surgery Wednesday.

He was 49-years-old.

A native of Borger, Lindsey was born August 24, 1929.

He was a graduate of New Mexico Military Institute and held a masters degree from West Texas State University.

Lindsey was a fighter and gave everything he did his very best. He was a tank officer in the Korean conflict.

Commanding a tank outfit which was dug in and being used for artillery, he was forced to crawl from thank to tank to give orders after the antennae of his machines were shot away.

As a combat officer he received the Presidential Unit Citation for action on Old Baldy and famed Pork Chop Hill. He also received personal commendation from his batallion [sic] commander and later the Bronze Star Medal.

He was only 23-years-old when he was given command of a tank company.

Even after leaving active duty, Lindsey continued to do his bit for the armed forces. He was a Command and General Staff College instructor and held the rank of lieutenant colonel in the reserve.

Bob, as he was known in Canyon, was primarily a rancher and farmer.

He was a past president of the Randall County Farmers Union and was active in the American Agriculture movement.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Canyon. A 32nd degree Mason, he was also a member of Khiva Temple.

At one time he was active in Canyon Rotary Club. He was interested in youth and was a supporter of Randall County Junior Livestock Association.

He also supported most of the undertakings at West Texas State University where he especially was interest in intercollegiate football and Panhandle Plains Historical Museum.

"He cared as much as anyone I have ever seen" a friend declared Saturday morning.

Bob had suffered heart disease the past few years and previously had had open heart surgery. In 1975, less than six months after one such operation he walked 10 miles to raise funds for the Heart Association.

To the very end he fought for his health and urged others with heart disease to follow suit.

Funeral services will be held at 11 o'clock Monday morning in Canyon First Baptist Church with Rev. James Hancock, pastor, officiating.

Graveside rites will be at 3 'clock Monday afternoon at Highland Park Cemetery in Borger. Masonic rites will be held by Isom Lodge No. 1242 AF & AM.

Survivors include the wife, Jo Carol; a son Robert III, a student at Texas Tech; a daughter, Becky Jo, a student at Baylor; a brother, Tommy of Borger; and two sisters, Mrs. Floyd Holland of Bartlesville, Okla., and Mrs. Bill Stephenson of Coleman.
