Family and friends of James Riley Davis honored his life with a graveside service on Tuesday, October 19, 2021, at the Gaines County Cemetery located in Seminole at 10:30 a.m. under the direction of Ratliff Funeral Home. Services were officiated by Charlie Johnson, pastor of First United Methodist Church of Seminole.
James Riley Davis flew his final flight to leave this beautiful earth on October 15, 2021. James was born on March 26, 1943, to James Grady and Tressia Clariece Wagner Davis in Brownfield. James and Sally Hunt were married on May 4, 1973.
James was raised in the agricultural community where his own love for all things agriculture was fostered on a daily basis, especially while tagging along with his grandfather (papaw) and his father in the daily farming activities. James' interest in flying developed in such a manner that he traded chores at the local airport for flying lessons, and he eventually earned his private and commercial licenses along with Airframe and Powerplant certification as well as an Inspection Authorization certification. His love for flying was evidenced by the fact that he accumulated 40,000 plus hours of flying time as an ag pilot (crop duster) over a 50 year period. James was a member of the First United Methodist Church and member of the Seminole Masonic Lodge No. 957.
James is remembered for his love of his family, his fierce work ethic, his consistent joy, and in his retirement years the ability to watch the hummingbirds endlessly on frequent trips to Ruidoso, N.M. He also never met a stranger and would engage anyone in a conversation and would always find common ground.
James is survived by his wife of 48 years, Sally Davis; his sons Scott Moore, Russell Moore and wife Kim, Ace Davis and Riley Davis and wife Kayla; two grandsons; two granddaughters and two great- grandsons.
The family has designated the Memorial Fund of the First Methodist Church, P.O. Box 1268, Seminole, Texas 79360 or the Education Fund of the Friends of the Gaines County Museum, 700 Hobbs Highway ,Seminole, Texas 79360 for memorial contributions donated in his memory in lieu of flowers.
