Beloved Citizen Dies Suddenly

Lottie Dawson, 72, a well-known and much loved citizen of Colorado City for many years, died suddenly in her home at 4:30 p.m., Wednesday afternoon.

Born Lottie Butler on January 18, 1910 in Smith County, she married Willie Dawson in 1943 in
Aiken, South Carolina. Mrs. Dawson worked as a cook on many farms and ranches in earlier years, including those of J. W. Watson, near Iatan, and Mr. and Mrs. Ross Daniels. Later, she and her husband built and ran the Dawson Hotel that was located behind the Mobil Station on 2nd Street and she cooked at the cafe adjoining the hotel.

Very active in church matters, Mrs. Dawson was a charter member of the College and Dallas Church of Christ. She has been characterized as an excellent organizer who saw what needed to be done and made sure it was taken care of. She also distributed clothing to those in need. For the last several years, Mrs. Dawson worked at the Civic Center, where many people were able to enjoy her superb cooking. Her chicken and dumplings have been described as "the best anyone ever tasted."

Mrs. Margaret Oyler, for whom Mrs. Dawson worked at the Civic Center, said sadly, "Those who never knew Lottie will never know what they missed."

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Sunday in the College and Dallas Church of Christ with Gary
Dennis, of the 22nd & Austin Church of Christ, officiating. Burial was in the Mitchell County
Cemetery under the direction of Kiker-Seale Funeral Home.

She is survived by her husband; a son, J. C. Dilworth of Colorado City; a sister, Mary Dirken of Compton, California, and two brothers, Joe Butler of Los Angeles, California, and Ray Butter of Dallas.
