HEREFORD — Family and friends will gather at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at Central Church of Christ in Hereford to celebrate the life of Mary Louise Axe with her son-in-law Wayne Burger. Minister of the Broken Arrow Church of Christ in Conifer, CO. and John Henley, Minister of Central Church of Christ officiating. Mrs. Axe, 101, a former long-time Hereford resident, passed away on August 28, 2014 in Amarillo. Professional services are provided by Parkside Chapel Funeral Home in Hereford, TX.

Mary Louise Goats was born on July 26, 1913 to Henry Lee and Mary Whittset Goats in Potter County, TX. She graduated from High School in Clayton, NM, she received her two year teaching certificate and license to teach in New Mexico from West Texas State Teachers College in Canyon in 1935. She thought in several schools in New Mexico, the last place she thought school was in Jumbo, TX.

She then married Wilburn Axe on May 15, 1936 in Hereford. Mrs. Axe was a farmer and ranchers wife, she worked along- side her husband on the farm. She was a member of DAR, Wyache Home Demonstration Club. She did her own yard work and gardening until she was 96, at which time she moved to The Craig. She was the best tomato grower, EVER. Mary was a member of Bell Avenue Church of Christ in Amarillo.

Left to cherish her memory are 1 son; Edwin Axe and wife Patricia of Lake Tanglewood, 2 daughters: Josephine Yvonne “Bonnie” Wright of Amarillo and Florence Louise “Weezie” Burger and husband Wayne of Conifer, CO., 1 sister-in-law Marilyn Goats of Silver City, NM., 9 grandchildren: Beverly Axe Lewis, Michelle Pounders, Melisa Kawin, Niki Archer, David Wright, Diane Fuller, Kevin Burger, Lorie Burger and Pam Miller. 16 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one grandson Mike Axe, three brothers and four sisters.

The family suggests memorials be made in Mrs. Axe’s name to the High Plains Children’s Home or a charity of choice.
