Operated Grocery Store
After farming for a few years between Hereford and Dimmitt, J. D. Curtsinger ran a grocery store in Hereford. He brought his family here from Denton County, Tex., in 1902, and except for two or three years when he ran a grocery store in Memphis, Tex., they continued to make their home at Hereford.
J. D. Curtsinger was born in Washington County, Kentucky; Fannie Cocanougher was born in the same county on Dec. 21, 1861. They were married in Collin County, Tex., on Dec. 24, 1880 and were members of the First Baptist Church in Hereford. She died here in 1908 and he in 1931.
Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Curtsinger were parents of: Bessie (Mrs. J. L.) Gillean, Ed (Hattie Ward), Emma (Mrs. W. D.) Norvell, Leonard (Norma Morris), and Gracie Lee Curtsinger, all of whom are deceased; and Ollie (Leona Johnson), Georgia (Mrs. Mack) Beach, and Joe (Leta Ashlock), all still living in Hereford. Mrs. Fannie Curtsinger, wife of J.D. Curtsinger died in this city Saturday November 7, 1908, and was buried the following day in the the [sic] Hereford cemetery. She was the daughter of Rev. A.J. Cocanougher, a minister of the Baptist denomination and when home was for many years at McKinney, Texas. The family had been on the Plains for six years, three years of which time their home was in Hereford, Mr. Curtsinger engaging in the grocery business. The mother leaves a bereaved husband and seven sorrowing children, ranging in age from eleven to twenty-six, four boys and three girls.
Mrs. Curtsinger had been confined to her bed for several weeks and tho the end was not unexpected to her many friends, her death was a severe shock to the father and children. The funeral services were held at the Baptist church, of which denomination she was a consistent member. A large concourse of friends followed the remains to their resting place.
Mrs. Cora McReynolds of Canyon City, a cousin of Mrs. Curtsinger, was with her during her last hours.
The Brand extends the deepes [sic] condolence to the members of the bereaved family in the loss of the wife, mother and dearest friend. Hereford Brand.
