John Gilbert Rites Today

HEREFORD, Aug. 16 - Funeral services for John David Gilbert, 69, Deaf Smith County resident since 1930, were scheduled for 3 p.m. today in the First Baptist Church of Hereford with the Rev. B.L. Davis, pastor, officiating.

Mr. Gilbert, a farmer, died at 7:15 a.m. Tuesday in Deaf Smith County hospital here. He moved to Hereford from Artesia, N.M.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church, and was a Mason. He was born Jan. 27, 1892, in Howard County, Ark.

Survivors include his wife, of the home; two sons, Doyle of Mineral Wells and J.D. Jr. of Hereford; a daughter, Mrs. Navis [sic] Couch of Anton; a brother, H.S., of Flomot; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Burial was to have been in West Park Cemetery here under the direction of Gililland Funeral Home.

Funeral services for Callie Z. Gilbert, 83, of 1209 E. Park Ave. will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Doug Manning, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be in West Park Cemetery under the direction of Gililland-Watson Funeral Home.

Mrs. Gilbert, who had resided in Hereford for 28 years, died Monday afternoon in Central Plains Hospital at Plainview.

Born Aug. 31, 1894 in Georgia, Callie Edwards married J.D. Gilbert Sr. Dec. 24, 1941 at Hulver. He preceded her in death in August 1961.

Mrs. Gilbert was also preceded in death by a son, Doyal, who died in 1963.

The Gilberts came to Hereford in 1950 from Artesia, N.M.

Mrs. Gilbert was a homemaker and a Baptist.

She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Marvis Conkin of Anton; a son, J.D. Gilbert Jr. of Hereford; three brothers, Finis Edwards of Dallas, Earl Edwards of Hurst and O.C. Edwards of Goodnight; two sisters, Mrs. Lucille Couch of Olton and Mrs. Ruby Bumpus of Plainview; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
