The following article was published in the Big Spring Daily Herald on Thursday, December 17, 1970:

H. M. (Herbie) Smith,
Native Big Springer

Howard M. (Herbie) Smith, 54, life-long resident of Big Spring and foreman in the Texas Electric Service Company distribution department, died in a hospital here at 7 a.m. today after a long illness. He had undergone surgery about a month ago.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Nalley-Pickle Rosewood Chapel with his pastor, the Rev. Caleb Hildebrand, minister of the Wesley Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Trinity Memorial Park.

Mr. Smith was born Aug. 8, 1916, in Big Spring and graduated from Big Spring High School.
He began his career with Texas Electric as a lineman in 1943, resigned to enter the U.S. Navy during World War II and returned in 1946.

He was a member of the Wesley Methodist Church, of the Staked Plains No. 598 Lodge of AF&AM, of the Dallas consistory of Scottish Rite Masons, of the Texas Electric Service Company Quarter Century Club. In high school he had played football, and later he served as co-captain of the Quarterback Club.

Surviving him are his wife, the former Billie Gilmore, to whom he was wed in Sweetwater Feb. 7, 1943; also two sons, Tim Smith and Terry Smith, both of Big Spring. He leaves one brother, Walter W. Smith, Puerto, Ordo, Venezuela; and two sisters, Mrs. Louise Herring, Midland, and Miss Vivian Smith, Big Spring.
