Chester Arthur was the son of John Henry and Susie Thornton Rosson, and was born in Anderson County, Texas.
On November 10, 1917, he married Hattie Mae Rawls. Shortly afterwards in May of 1918, he was deployed to Europe to serve in World War I. He saw action at Bellou Woods, France and Chateau Ferry, France where he was wounded from mustard gas. He suffered damage to his lungs.
