DUMAS - Joe Pat Mowery, 73, died Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008, in Amarillo.

Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Lieb Cemetery. Memorial services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in First United Methodist Church of Dumas with the Rev. Michael Mowery of Grapevine and the Rev. Ken Mowery of Fort Collins officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors of Dumas.

Joe Pat was born Jan. 17, 1935, in rural Moore County to Fred and Eleanor Parks Mowery. He grew up in Dumas and was a lifetime resident of Moore County.

Before graduating in 1953, Joe Pat became a very distinguished athlete setting numerous school records in track and football. He served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957.

He earned his bachelor's degree in education from Panhandle State University and his master's degree from West Texas University. He worked for Dumas Independent School District from 1966 to 1998.

He loved children and it showed as he served as a teacher, coach and as assistant principal for Dumas High School. On July 20, 1991, he was united in marriage to Lynda Baugh.

He served as head usher at First United Methodist Church, where he was a lifetime member. Joe Pat was on the pastor, parish and parsonage committee and numerous other committees.

He was also a member of the Dumas Noon Lions Club. He was an avid sports fan, but the thing he enjoyed most was chasing his grandchildren and following their sporting events and activities.

He was preceded in death by his parents and 10 brothers and sisters.

Survivors include his wife Lynda; four daughters, Kelly Satterfield and husband Darall of Dumas, Karla McCallie and husband Brent of Canyon, Kelly Jones and husband Brett of Owasso, Okla., and Brandy Ortiz and husband Shane of Amarillo; a brother, W.C. Mowery of California; a sister, Ruby Simmons of Stephenville; eight grandchildren, Kara and Lacy Satterfield, Cade McCallie, Kamryn and Jackson Jones, and Slayde, Stratton and Sage Ortiz; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family suggests memorials be to BSA Hospice, P.O. Box 950, Amarillo, TX 79105; First United Methodist Church of Dumas, 401 Binkley Ave., Dumas, TX 79029; or Lieb Cemetery Association, 11547 County Road 13, Stinnett, TX 79083.

The family will be at 300 Bennett Drive in Dumas.
