One of Borger's most widely known and honored community leaders, Mrs. Alice Ellen Crawford, died Tuesday afternoon.

Mrs. Crawford, 65, of 113 Abilene, the wife of former Borger mayor, Guy Crawford, had been a Borger resident since 1947.

She was dead on arrival at North Plains Hospital at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Born at Beaver, Okla., Jan. 14, 1908, Mrs. Crawford graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree "cum laude" from Southwestern Teachers College in Weatherford, Okla., in 1935. A teacher for 18 years, she also substitute taught in the Borger schools.

Mrs. Crawford worked for a better world for the youth and was a supporter of the Borger Youth Center. The Negro Youth Center, in conjunction with the Negro Chamber of Commerce, honored her for her work.

She worked in PTA nine years, and served three years as a Cub Scout den mother, and taught Sunday school in the First Presbyterian Church, where she was a member.

Mrs. Crawford was also active in the American Field Service and its foreign student program, and served as president of the Borger chapter. She also helped with lodging, meals, transportation and entertainment of the AFS students.

She served as director of the Miss Lake Meredith Pageant and as chaperone at the Miss Texas Pageant in Fort Worth.

Mrs. Crawford was also a clubwoman. In 1959, she was named "clubwoman of 1959" by the Texas Federation of Women's Clubs for both the state and district.

She was past president of the Conamour Club and was a member of the district TFWC district convention in Borger.

She also served as chairman of the local Federated Club's "Pride Project," and had taken the lead in many Borger beutification projects. She served two years as president of the Top of Texas District, Texas Federation of Women's Clubs, and served as Women's Division Chairman for the Hutchinson County United Fund campaign.

Mrs. Crawford also served as president of the Hutchinson County Cancer Society, Collectors Club, and Lioness Club. For 15 years she served as director of Beta Chi Chapter, Beta Sigma Phi.

For several years she had been an active worker in the United Fund, March of Dimes, Cancer Fund, Heart Fund, the local mental health committee and the Sabine oral vaccine program. She was secretary of the Tri-City Concert Association Board, worked on bond issues, on "Get Out and Vote" campaigns, and numerous other projects.

Mrs. Crawford also assisted many Chamber of Commerce and Jaycee projects. She was a member of the county board to remodel the library and served as county chairman of a tuberculosis X-ray clinic, and as a member of the county cancer board.

The Borger Noon Lions Club called on her for help numerous times and named her an honorary member in appreciation. The Key Club of Borger High School named her "Leader of the Year" in 1960.

She was appointed to the Hutchinson County Hale-Aiken Committee for Curriculum Revision and served in the Women's Division of the Chamber of Commerce, of which she was a charter member.

In April of this year, she was named the Beta Sigma Phi Woman of the Year. Just a week ago, the City of Borger honored Mrs. Crawford with an appreciation award for her services to the city on the Municipal Services Board from which she recently resigned. She was also a charter member of the board.

Funeral services for Mrs. Crawford will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Robert Presnall, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Jimmy Glenn, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Raton, N.M.

Interment will follow in Westlawn Memorial Park under the direction of Minton Mortuary.

The casket will remain open at the mortuary until one hour before the funeral service.

Survivors include her husband, Guy, one son, Gary of Austin; her mother, Mrs. Edna S. Garrett of Lawton, Okla.; one brother, Paul Garrett of Corona, Calif.; two sisters, Mrs. R.L. McCrory of Tulsa, and Mrs. H.A. Johnson of Lawton.

Memorials may be made to favorite charities.
