Borger News Herald - June 16, 1952

The body of John Crawford, 81, missing from his home since early Thursday morning and the object of several intensive local searches, involving hundreds of volunteer horseback, foot, automobile and airborne searchers, was found 3 p.m. Sunday by two local youths, Buford Bullard and Dean Serman.

Crawford, resident of Borger since 1926, was dead when found in the canyon east of the Borger-Phillips road on the Coble lease. A 35-man posse, the third group to scour the area around Borger since Crawford's disappearance, had looked all day Sunday without success when the boys discovered the body.

Judge C.C. McCasland returned a verdict of accidental death due to over-exertion and exposure, following a coroner's inquest into Crawford's death.

Crawford is survived by his wife, Mrs. A.J. Crawford, and two daughters, Mrs. Austin Collard, Borger, and Mrs. J.N. Creech of Midland; a son, Frank, who lives in Kansas; one brother, Otho, of Yoakum, Texas, three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Crawford came to Borger in 1926 as an oil field worker and has been retired for several years. He resided at 920 N. Harvey. He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene.

Services have been set for Tuesday, 4 p.m., in the Church of the Nazarene, with Rev. Amos R. Meador officiating. Pallbearers include Wayne Yarborough, E.L. Lantron, Joe Scherer, S.E. Newcomb, Jack Hulls and J.E. Ellis.

Interment will be in Highland Park Cemetery in Borger under the direction of Minton Funeral Home.
