A 25-year-old Wheeler man was killed about 5 a.m. Monday in a car-truck accident which shredded the car into a flat mass of twisted metal.

Herbie [sic] Wayne Mason was pronounced dead at the scene on US 66, 10 miles east of Amarillo, by Potter County Justice of the Peace, Cliff Roberts. The accident occurred about two miles east of the spot where westbound US 66 and US 60 branch into two roads.

The accident occurred when a westbound truck, driven by J.D. Coffman of Oklahoma City, struck the Mason car which was parked in the road, the truck driver told Department of Public Safety officers.

Coffman said the headlights of another car traveling east on 66 partially blinded him just before the crash.

He said the Mason vehicle did not have any lights burning.

The truck, which was enroute from Oklahoma City to Amarillo, struck the left front of the car, tearing most of the car's roof from the body.

The force of the collision imprinted the truck's license plate number on the front side door of the car.

More than 1 1/2 hours were required to remove Mason's body from the flattened wreckage. Coffman was not injured.

Two unites of the Amarillo Fire Department were needed to wash down spilled fuel from the two vehicles.

Funeral services for Herby were Wednesday, May 13, 1970. He was 25 years old.

He was born June 23, 1945 in Wheeler. Bill Mason and Delpha Ruth Morris are the parents.
