Mrs. Jack Hutson, 69-year-old well known Deaf Smith County farm wife, was killed instantly yesterday afternoon about 4:30 o'clock in an automobile-truck collision five miles north of Hereford. Her husband, 76 years old, was critically injured.
Mr. and Mrs. Hutson were returning to their home near the Ward community 14 miles northwest of Hereford after a visit there when the car in which they were riding collided almost head-on with an oil truck driven by Elmer Mathies of Hereford. The wreck took place in a dust flurry, it was reported.
The woman was killed immediately. Mr. Hutson suffered a broken left leg, a broken left arm, and internal injuries. The victims were taken to Hereford by Colby Conkwright, Deaf Smith farmer; and Mr. Hutson was brought to St. Anthony's Hospital, Amarillo, in an ambulance.
Neither Mathies nor his companion, Arthur Rogers, also of Hereford was injured. A small granddaughter of the Hutsons, riding in the back seat of the automobile, escaped injury.
Mr. and Mrs. Hutson have resided near Hereford for the last 15 years. Their old home is at Garland in Dallas County. They had been married 53 years.
Survivors are three sons, John Hutson of Borger, Sam Hutson, Lamb County sheriff, Littlefield, and Bill Hutson of Hereford; and five daughters, Mrs. Charley Hoover of Hereford; Mrs. D.O. Williams, of Abernathy, Miss Lucille Hutson of Shreveport, La., Mrs. Charles Wharton of Denver, and Mrs. Howard Ledbetter of Vega.
The body of Mrs. Hutson is in the care of the Black Funeral Home at Hereford.
The condition of Mr. Hutson last night was described as "critical."
