Born on November 11, 1931, Diane Jowell Roberson passed peacefully from this life on May 7, 2014 into the tender care of her Heavenly Father, rejoining her beloved daughter Sharon and husband Ed and her parents, Lela and Roy Jowell, after so many years apart.
Diane fought bravely for many years with myriad health problems she never discussed or allowed to limit her - her mantra was that cheerfulness is a choice, and she lived that belief every single day. She inspired everyone who knew her with her powerful example of grace and courage and strength, of a life spent focusing on others instead of herself, of finding beauty in the small moments and being a true example of her favorite Scripture: " ...And the greatest of these is Love."
Her faith was strong, and she leaves behind a congregation of which she was a vital force and a guiding light. Shepherd of the Hills Christian Church in Austin, where she was a charter member, was a family as much as a church home, and she will be greatly missed.
In her nursing career, she touched many lives, and her final specialization at Hospice Austin was a delight to her as well as a comfort to her patients. A medical assistant until she was widowed in her fifties, she then went to nursing school to become an RN while caring for her mother and working full-time, even as rheumatoid arthritis was beginning to stake its claim. Diane did not know the meaning of the word quit.
A proud member of a Deaf Smith County pioneer family, a lover of books, animals, opera, movies, purple, and Jeopardy!, an adventurous soul who learned to ride a motorcycle in her forties and celebrated turning seventy with a tattoo, our Mother and Nanny has been a constant source of joy and inspiration to all of us.
Her indomitable spirit and her example of the better person all of us aspire to be will never leave son Edward R. (Buddy) Roberson Jr. and his wife Liz; daughter Jean Brashear and son-in-law Ercel, grandchildren Seneca Brashear, Jackie Paris and Jonathan Brashear, grandson-in-law James Paris and great-grandchildren Justin, Joey, Jenny, Jamie and Jonny Paris, Kate and Emma Yates.
Beloved friends are too numerous to mention, but the family would like to express our deep gratitude for all their love and support. Her dear friend Pat White did so much to help us through this time, and the outpouring of affection from all in her last weeks was a lovely cocoon for her and a balm for our aching hearts.
Heartfelt thanks to Dr. Asif Syed and the kind and compassionate staff of Bel Air at Teravista and Hospice Austin for helping us to provide her with a peaceful and positive journey to her Savior's side.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Shepherd of the Hills Christian Church, Hospice Austin, or are requested. A celebration of her life will be held at Shepherd of the Hills Christian Church and the family requests that you wear the brightest, most cheerful colors you own to attend a service that will honor a life lived with laughter and a deep and abiding love for her fellow man.
Burial beside her husband Ed and daughter Sharon will be in Rest Lawn Cemetery in Hereford.
