When John Allen Ammons was born on June 11, 1872, in Cheoah, North Carolina, his father, Thomas, was 22 and his mother, Rachel, was 21. He married Nancy Elizabeth Colvard on August 29, 1892, in his hometown. They had ten children in 24 years. He died on February 26, 1942, in Vernon, Texas, at the age of 69, and was buried in Fargo, Texas.

Ammons Rites Held Friday

Prominent Wilbarger County Farmer Dies in Local Hospital Thursday.

Funeral services for J. A. Ammons, 69, prominent Wilbarger County farmer, who died in a local hospital early Thursday morning, were held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Baptist Church of Fargo. The pastor, Rev. Otis Strickland, conducted the rites, assisted by Rev. F.D. Pearson. Burial was in the Fargo cemetery under the direction of the Underwood Funeral Home.
Pall bearers were: Leslie Hamilton, Sherman Sweatmon, Byron Phillips, E.G. Adkins, E.S. Dockery and T.R. Olive.
Mr. Ammons came to Wilbarger County from North Carolina in 1907 and had engaged in farming in the Fargo community ever since.
In addition to the widow, he is survived by one son, Kermit Ammons of Vernon; seven daughters, Mrs. Harley Hyde of Alamosa, Co; Mrs. Shelton Shaw, Mrs. Elwyn Bingham, Mrs. Wesley Ross, Mrs. Claude Emmett and Mrs. Clois Sharp, all of Vernon, and Mrs. L.F. Roberts of Amstead, NM; two brothers, C.C. Ammons and Robert Ammons of Vernon; two sisters, Mrs. L.B. Woodward of Vernon and Mrs. Beller Smith of Spring Lake, TX; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
