E.L. "Grandpa" Wilson died in the Northwest Texas hospital in Amarillo at six a.m. this morning. Official sources indicate the old-timer would have been ninety-seven years of age next month. However, close friends say he claimed that he would be 99.
Wilson fell on Main Street Tuesday and was helped to his apartment at 112 W. Second St., where he resided alone. He was taken to the North Plains hospital where it was discovered he had suffered a compound fracture of the right shoulder and arm. He was transferred to the Northwest Texas hospital at Amarillo and physicians discovered he was also suffering from hardening of the arteries and a slight cold. At 4 p.m. yesterday it was announced that Wilson definitely had pneumonia.
Wilson was a famed traveler and in June, 1946, his picture appeared in a San Diego, Calif., paper. It was headed "One Oldster Meets Another" and showed him along side a giant Galapagos turtle, which zoo authorities claimed was an even hundred.
Every July, since Wilson resided in Borger, he made a long bus trip alone to Odessa, Old Mexico, California, Washington State, Canada, and Illinois. He visited friends and relatives on this annual tour and in recent years he reportedly "lived from one tour to the next."
Last year he saw Niagara Falls for the first time and had been planning ever since to return there this July. His love for the northwest was natural since he had spent his early days as a teamster in northwest lumber camps. He was born in Indiana and spent his childhood in Arkansas.
Funeral arrangements are pending with the Minton Funeral home until the arrival of relatives.
Survivors include a son, Roy Wilson, San Fernando, Cal.; a daughter, Mrs. J.P. Neilson, Los Angeles; two sisters, Mrs. Mollie Rebush, Odessa, Texas, and Mrs. Ella Mason, Seattle, Wash.; and a brother, Nelson Wilson, Clarkston, Wash.
