Walter E. Smith, Jr. went to be with his Lord in Heaven Sunday, June 14, 2015.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, June 17, 2015 from 5-7 p.m. at Nalley Pickle and Welch Funeral Home, 906 South Gregg Street, Big Spring. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 18, 2015, at First Baptist Church of Westbrook, 207 North McKenney Street. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. at the Peace Chapel at Trinity Memorial Park, 6900 South US 87, Big Spring.

Jr. was born in Big Spring, Texas February 5, 1926, to W.E. Smith, Sr. and Lula Mae Slaton Smith.

He was a proud Army veteran of World War II, serving in South Africa and in Italy.

Jr. was a Lead Engineer at Texas Electric for 35 plus years. He then served on the Mitchell County Hospital Board, the Westbrook School Board and was instrumental in bringing back 6 man football to Westbrook Schools.

Jr. was a great, honest and loyal friend, and a hard working provider for his wife and children. Jr. was a loving husband and father who could strike up a conversation with anyone about anything.

From hauling lumber to build the Baptist Church he attended, to always being willing to lend a helping hand, Junior was a person who could be depended on by family and friends. He lived the life of a Mason, Shriner and was a Christian man.

We want to thank Emma Martinez and Elsa Vargas for their support and friendship to Jr. and Bobbie, and the Caregivers of Oxford Glen in Grand Prairie for their love and devotion to their first resident.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sisters, Vestal Marshall and Betty Lou Miller.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Bobbie; son, Trey and wife, Lesa of Fort Worth; daughter, Kellye Newburn of Georgetown; 2 grandchildren, Ashley Shriver of Galveston and Nicolas Newburn of Georgetown. He is also survived by special nieces, nephews and a host of many friends whom he loved dearly.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shriner Hospitals of Galveston at www.shrinershospitalsforchildren.org, the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children at www.tsrhc.org, the Diabetes Research Foundation, 200 S. Park Road St., Suite 100, Hollywood, Florida 33021, the Alzheimer's Association, 4400 N. Big Spring St., Suite C-32, Midland, Texas 79705, or a charity of your choice.
