*Obituary for E. Don
Borger pioneer, civic leader and businessman E.D. Baker died Saturday at the age of 91 in his home.

Funeral services for Mr. Baker will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Henry Chisholm, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park under the direction of Minton-Chatwell Funeral Directors.

Mr. Baker moved to Borger in 1927 because "he was looking for work and there was a boom on," according to files from the Borger News-Herald. Mr. Baker's first job in Borger was with the Johnson Ranch. He then founded his own business, the E.D. Baker Corporation.

The contracting business is still located in Borger.

Mr. Baker was a founding regent of Frank Phillips College and served as the first president of that institution. He was also founding director and past president of the Borger Country Club; was a past president and nine-year trustee for the Borger Independent School District Board of Trustees; founding directors of First National Bank; past director of the Borger Chamber of Commerce; member board of directors of The Salvation Army; was also a member of the board of directors of the United Way, Borger Rotary Club, the El Paso Scottish Rite, and Isom Masonic Lodge #1242, where he received a 70-year member award.

Mr. Baker was a native of Geneva, Indiana and graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a B.S. degree. He married Kathleen Hawkins on Aug. 5, 1930 in Hereford. She preceded him in death in 1974. Also preceding him in death was a son, E.D. "Buzzy" Baker Jr., in 1989.

Survivors include a son, Art Baker of Amarillo; a daughter, Nancy Windt of Sarasota, Fla.; and five grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Salvation Army, Box 1046, Borger Texas 79007 or Frank Phillips College Endowment Fund, Box 5118, Borger, Texas 79007.

Funeral services for Kathleen Hawkins Baker, 67, of 611 W. Jackson, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Robert Presnall, pastor, officiating.

Interment will follow in the Westlawn Memorial Park under the direction of Minton Mortuary.

Mrs. Baker died at her home at 3 a.m. today. She was born Nov. 1, 1906 in Hereford and had been a resident of Borger since 1927. She had taught in the Borger School System from 1927 until 1935.

Mrs. Baker was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Paragon Club.

Survivors include her husband, E.D. (Don), of the home; two sons, Art of Amarillo and Buzz of Borger; one daughters, Mrs. Nancy Scovill of Sarasota, Florida, and two grandchildren.

All memorials are requested to be made to Girls Town.
