Obituary 1---
Gilbert L. "Bill" Smith, 75, Borger, died Monday, April 1, 1996 in St. Anthony's Hospice in Amarillo.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church Chapel with the Rev. Gregg Simmons, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery by Minton-Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger.

A native of Henryetta, Okla., he had been a Borger resident since 1926. He was a self-employed general construction/carpentry. He was a lifetime member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters, served as past Commodore of Lake Meredith Yacht Club twice. He also served on the City Plumbing Board and member of VFW.

He was a U.S. World War II Army veteran serving in the 30th Infantry Division in Europe in 1944-45. He was discharged with Field Commission as a Sergeant and received the Purple Heart.

He married LaVerne Laird on April 19, 1964.

He was preceded in death by a brother, A.R. "Mark" Smith in 1971.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Richard H. Smith of Vernon; a daughter, Cordy Howard Munoz of Arlington; and two grandchildren.
