Roy Smith, one of the first men to arrive in early-day Borger, died this morning at 2 a.m. in North Plains Hospital.

Coming to the boomtown area in March, 1926, with a team of mules, Smith founded the Smith Dirt Contractor company which he operated until 1940.

He then established the Smith-Robinson Grading Company with a son-in-law, Claude Robinson, and was active in company operations until retirement in 1957.

The 70-year-old pioneer resident was a veteran of World War I and member of the Gateway Church of Christ. A 32nd Degree Mason, he belonged to Isom Lodge 1242.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. in the Gateway Church of Christ with Charles Hill, minister, officiating.

Interment will be in Highland Park Cemetery under the direction of Minton Mortuary.

Smith is survived by the widow, Pearl, of the home, 512 Crockett; one daughter, Mrs. Claude Robinson of Borger; one son, B.L. of Stratford; two brothers, Ollie and Ray, and a sister, Mrs. Junia Briscoe, all of Caney, Kan.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Elda Pearl Smith, 82, of Coldwater Manor Nursing Home in Stratford, died Sunday in the Stratford.

A housewife, she was a native of Denver, Ark., and a Borger resident since 1926, having lived in Stratford for three years. She was a member of the Johnson Park Church of Christ, and married to the late Roy Smith.

She is survived by one son, B.L. Smith of Stratford; one daughter, Mrs. Claude (Marie) Robinson of Borger; five grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and three great great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Minton Memorial Chapel with Judge Morris, the minister of Gardner Street Church of Christ officiating. He will be assisted by Cleo Myers, an elder in the church.

Burial will be in Highland Park Cemetery under the direction of Minton/Chatwell Funeral Directors.
